When I started helping realtors with their online marketing, I noticed something quickly. Most of them don’t actually hate social media. They’re just tired. Tired of guessing what to post. Tired of doing everything right and still getting crickets. Tired of feeling like it’s all a waste of time.
If you’ve been showing up but not seeing results, here are five mistakes I see all the time. And if you’re making them, you’re definitely not the only one.
1. Only Posting Listings
I get why this happens. Listings are easy. You’re already creating the content, so why not post it? The problem is that if every post is just another property, people tune out. They need to know more than what’s for sale. They need to know why you do what you do and how you can help them better than someone else. That’s what builds trust.
2. Hiding Behind Graphics
I’ve worked with agents who had gorgeous feeds but never showed up in a single photo. Not once. And you could feel it. The content looked professional, but felt cold and a bit fake. The moment we added a quick selfie or a short video, people started responding. Clients don’t hire logos. They hire humans, and they want to see who’s behind the scenes.
3. Writing Like You’re in a Brochure
This one’s tough because it sounds professional. But professional doesn’t always mean relatable. You don’t need to write like a newspaper ad. You need to write like you talk. Yes, really. One of the biggest shifts I made with clients was helping them write captions that sound like they’re texting a friend. That’s when things started to click. Check my plug-and-play captions to get a feel!
4. Ignoring Stories
I’ll be honest. Stories are one of the most powerful tools for connection. It’s where people start to feel like they know you. Even if it’s just a quick clip from your morning or a walk through a new listing, it gives people a peek behind the curtain. And that peek builds connection. Which leads to leads.
5. Waiting for Perfect
This was me for way too long. As a marketing manager putting myself out there to show my work, I’d rewrite my own posts ten times or scrap a post just because the something was off. But the posts that brought in real people? They weren’t perfect. They were real. Imperfect, honest, and human. That’s what people respond to. If you’re always waiting for perfect, you’ll stay invisible!
